THE ORIGINS
Since the beginning the Laurel grows in the Mediterranean area as an hardy plant and it also spreads in the Mediterranean scrub. In the Greek and Roman mithology laurel represents the glory and the wisdom and it is considered a sacred plant.
The myth of Daphne gives rise to all the beliefs and current traditions about the laurel. The wonderful nymph strongly courted by Apollo, but at the same time eager of her freedom, decided to run away from Apollo and she was so scared to implored her parents to turn her in a laurel plant. Apollo was so disappointed to decide planting a laurel plant in his garden and giving the feature to be evergreen. In addition to this Apollo and with the intention of celebrating his undying love he decided to bring forever a wreath of leaves on his head.
Soon the wreath of leaves becomes symbol of greatness in the arts, sports and eroic deeds. During the first Olimpic Games of 776 b.C. the winners were crowned with a wreath of laurel. In the Roman age emperors and consuls, as poets and writers were glorified with the same practice. During the middle age some important poets were appointed as “graduated poet” as in the modern age a graduate is crowned with a laurel wreath.
THE PROPERTIES
The laurel is widely used in the kitchen, to flavour meat and fish and due to its sweet and intense aroma, it’s amazing when it is used to prepare teas and refreshing digestive.
The laurel leaves have a powerful antioxidant properties due to their ability to neutralize free radicals and bring mineral and vitamins salts to our healthy alimentation
In the regions of southern Italy and especially in Sicily the leaves are infused to prepare a fragrant and aromatic liqueur which also has digestive, antiseptic and stimulating properties. And it is precisely from these ancient recipes that we at Issimo created our Allora.
LAUREL AND SICILY
Originally from the Mediterranean basin, it finds in Sicily a perfect habitat for its development where it grows spontaneously both in coastal areas and inland. This naturalness and spontaneity in the development of the plant gives its name to a specific type of scrub: Lauretum. This habitat, which is widespread in Sicily, combines many types of plants typical of the area.
Since its origins, bay leaves have been used in Sicilian cuisine and today this beneficial plant has been included in traditional Italian agri-food products P.A.T. of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies as a typical Sicilian product.
WHO WE ARE, OUR ADVENTURE
We are an Italian start-up active in the production of Sicilian liqueurs such as ALLORA and Fichissimo. Liqueurs handcrafted in Sicily where prickly pears and laurel plants grow in all their flavor and goodness.
As often, our journey started by chance.
We chose such names, because our liqueurs are both very, very cool (both prickly pear and cool are translated by the Italian word “fico”, hence Fichissimo)!!
With great care and passion, we handed over all the original techniques and steps to a Sicilian distillery that carefully maintains the same characteristics of simplicity and craftsmanship without any additives.
The passion of an Italian manager for the production of artisanal liqueurs for personal use, combined with the creativity of an Italian entrepreneur who immediately perceived its value and immediately created the name were the ingredients of this adventure, the adventure of Fichissimo and Allora!
The choice of Sicily as the place of cultivation and production is a tribute to this wonderful land: a warm and welcoming land where such healthy plants found a perfect home.
